Wood Defender Fence Stain Colors, on the Wood You’ll Actually Buy
Every color on this page is Wood Defender stain on Western Red Cedar, because that is the fence All-State builds and the wood All-State sells. All-State Fence & Supply is an authorized Wood Defender dealer at all three Fence Supply Centers — Lubbock, the Amarillo & Canyon Fence Supply Center, and Midland, which serves Midland and Odessa. The full line is available: 42 published colors across four product lines, most stocked at the counter and the rest on special order. Tap any picket below to see that product on Wood Defender’s site, then see it in person at the counter, where every color is displayed on cedar.
Which Wood Defender stain is right for a new cedar fence?
For most new cedar fences in West Texas, Semi-Transparent is the right call. It carries more pigment than Transparent, which means more UV protection, and Wood Defender rates it for up to six years with a three-year warranty. It is what most fence contractors in Lubbock, Amarillo and Midland spray. Choose Transparent when you want the cedar grain to show through as much as possible and accept a shorter cycle: Wood Defender rates it for up to four years with a two-year warranty. Both are oil-based, penetrating stain-and-seal products, so they soak into the picket rather than sitting on top of it — which is why they don’t peel the way a film-forming stain does after two summers of Panhandle sun.
- Transparent Fence Stain & Seal — new cedar. Fine pigment, grain shows through. Up to four years; two-year warranty.
- Semi-Transparent Fence Stain & Seal — new or aged wood. More pigment, more UV protection, more coverage. Up to six years; three-year warranty. The contractor default.
- 200 Series — built for decks and horizontal surfaces; chosen for fences when durability is the first priority.
- Semi-Solid Latex — for restoring a fence that already carries a waterborne stain, or where low-VOC is required.
A 5-gallon bucket starts at $183.41 at the counter, before tax. A 5-gallon bucket covers about 875 square feet, and on dry wood one coat is enough. We can also special-order Penofin, but for cedar fence we recommend Wood Defender.
Prices as of October 2026.
What are the 42 Wood Defender colors?
Swatches on this page are approximations. Stain reads differently on cedar than on pine, and darker on new wood than on weathered wood — every color is displayed on a Western Red Cedar board at all three Fence Supply Centers, and that board is the real thing. Tap any picket to see the product on Wood Defender’s site.

Pick the color on this page, then look at it on real cedar before you buy. Stain reads darker on cedar than on pine, and darker on new wood than on gray wood; the same can of Coffee Brown on a two-year-old fence and a new one gives two different fences. Every color is displayed on cedar at all three Fence Supply Centers. Take a look outside in daylight if you can — that is the light your fence lives in.
Does Wood Defender make “dark walnut”?
No. “Dark walnut fence stain” is one of the most-searched stain colors in the country, and Wood Defender does not make a color by that name. The two that land closest on Western Red Cedar are Transparent Black Walnut and Semi-Transparent Coffee Brown. Bring a photo of the fence you saw, and the counter will show you both on cedar so you can decide.
What is the best black stain for a fence?
Ask for a semi-transparent black or near-black on cedar and look at it in full sun before committing. A true black on a west-facing fence in Lubbock or Midland absorbs the most heat of any color, which shortens the maintenance cycle on the sunny side. The counter can show a black next to a dark brown, and a lot of people who came in for black leave with the brown once they see both.
Custom colors
Beyond the 42 published colors, Wood Defender can mix custom colors. Ask at the counter if you’re matching an existing fence or looking for something the board doesn’t show.
Who stains fences in Lubbock, Amarillo and Midland?
All-State sells the stain and does not apply it. Buy the stain at the counter, and have one of these local applicators put it on. Each one works with Wood Defender products and has agreed to be listed here.

Contractors, schools and government buyers get discounted pricing, with deeper discounts by volume, in any quantity, and charge accounts are set up case by case.
Why buy stain from a fence company?
Because the people at the counter build fences with the wood you are staining. All-State has installed cedar fence in West Texas since 1979 and stocks Western Red Cedar cut from Canadian logs and milled in Washington, the same pickets the crews use. The counter knows how a color behaves on that board after a Lubbock summer, which a paint aisle can’t tell you. That experience shows in 340 Google reviews in Lubbock averaging 4.7 stars and 98 in Midland averaging 4.7, with 125 more at the Amarillo & Canyon Fence Supply Center.

Questions people ask before they buy stain
Are you an authorized Wood Defender dealer?
Yes, at all three Fence Supply Centers, with the full line available.
How much is a 5-gallon bucket of Wood Defender?
From $183.41 before tax at the counter. Contractor pricing is lower.
Do you have Wood Defender dark walnut?
That isn’t a Wood Defender color. Transparent Black Walnut and Semi-Transparent Coffee Brown are the closest; see both on cedar at the counter.
Do you stain fences?
No. All-State sells the stain and recommends a local applicator in each market, or you can spray it yourself.
Can I see the colors in person?
Yes. Every color is displayed on cedar at all three Fence Supply Centers.
Do you carry Penofin?
We can special-order it, but for cedar fence we recommend Wood Defender.
What is the best semi-transparent stain for a cedar fence?
Wood Defender Semi-Transparent Fence Stain & Seal: an oil-based penetrating stain rated for up to six years with a three-year warranty, and the product most West Texas fence contractors spray on new cedar.
How long should new cedar sit before staining?
At least three weeks after installation, so the moisture trapped in the bundle can dry out, and two to three days after a rain. On dry wood, one coat is enough.
Do you sell pre-stained cedar pickets?
No. We sell unstained Western Red Cedar and the Wood Defender to stain it.
